The needs of a family under stress at a funeral or a wedding should
be considered in the design of the sanctuary and its entrance. Churches
are one of the few buildings that regularly accommodate once in a lifetime
events. Given the significance of these type of events, it is important
to consider them in the renovation project.
Is there cover for the bride as she enters the front door? Does she
have a special, private roomy area to get dressed? Is the entrance big
enough to accommodate the whole wedding party?
For a funeral, does the family of the deceased have a place to get
together before a service? Can the coffin be brought into the sanctuary
in a simple and seemly manner? Is the aisle wide enough for the coffin
and the pallbearers?
Other events such as the Ordination of Elders or Deacons, confirmations,
and baptisms are often not considered. Spaces designed for normal Sunday
worship are often inadequate for these special occasions.
Take care in planning for the renovation to give these special events
the space and importance they require.
