Does music play an important role in the service? Music is an important
part of many traditions, but often not well accommodated. This is true of
both the way the choir enters and exits the room, but most importantly when
the acoustical character of the room is not conducive. Bowling alley churches
are the worst offenders, often achieving a funeral parlor like atmosphere.
The choir is often made up of some of the most active people in a church,
but they rehearse in a left over classroom, well apart from the sanctuary.
Attention should be given to providing a place for them to robe or even to
store music or instruments.
In many communities the large older church is the only space suited for
large choral or orchestral works. Some churches take advantage of this,
recognizing that this is a service that they can provide to the community.
It is important to consider what role music plays in your church, how you
would like to build on that role, and decide what changes best suit your music
needs.
